Dimensions of Wellbeing Continued: A KOHLER Perspective for Global Design

Now in its third expression, Kohler’s Perspective of the Year provides a design-centered framework for emerging ideas in the global marketplace. Through the Perspective of the Year, we seek to initiate a conversation about the relationship of architecture and design to developments within art, fashion, entertainment, business, lifestyles and other cultural touchstones.

With the introduction of Dimensions of Wellbeing in 2020, we focused on the role of personal habits and hygiene in our physical, mental and spiritual health. This second phase will expand on this concept to explore the broader relationship between designed environments and wellbeing.

Dimensions of Wellbeing Defined

At its heart, Dimensions of Wellbeing is a very simple idea — our physical spaces affect us. As simple as it appears at first, it’s also an incredibly profound concept that affects every element of society and the environment.

Dimensions of Wellbeing offers a way of looking at designed spaces through our interactions with them, not as static arrangements of objects, but rather as dynamic, ever-changing systems that have meaning and impact in our lives.

Designing Wellbeing

Kohler recognizes that wellbeing is personal, subjective, and fluid. As such, spaces that can adapt to their occupants’ personal interpretation of wellbeing inherently provide a more fulfilling experience.

Through Dimensions of Wellbeing, Kohler seeks to empower architects and designers to create spaces that respond to their occupants and the many ways their lives have changed over the course of 2020 and 2021, enabling them to create a specific mood or feeling through the combination of form and function.

From the personalized cleanliness and comfort of an intelligent toilet to the transformative microenvironment of a freestanding bath, Kohler products and technologies contribute to wellbeing in rich and multifaceted ways.

The bathroom is actually the hub for wellbeing. It's where you take care of yourself. Sometimes it's the only space in which you have privacy and you're able to disconnect. So we see the bathroom evolving. It's not just a task-oriented space, it's a living space.
